Case summary

The complainant, a 26-year-old woman married to Vivek Balkisan Gulapelli, residing in Pune, states that since her marriage on 01/06/2023, she has been subjected to continuous mental and physical harassment by her mother-in-law Madhavi Gulapelli, husband Vivek, and brothers-in-law Vinay and Bharat Gulapelli, primarily on the basis of her caste (Matang/Mang community).
Shortly after the marriage, her mother-in-law began insulting her in front of family members, repeatedly referring to her as from a “lower caste” and blaming her for bringing “shame” to the household. The harassment escalated after she became pregnant in July 2023, culminating in a miscarriage in the sixth month, which her mother-in-law allegedly claimed she had caused deliberately. Following this, the complainant faced continued verbal abuse, humiliation, and arguments with her husband, mother-in-law, and brothers-in-law, including taunts regarding the gold she brought in marriage and her social status.
The complainant states that she and her husband briefly moved out due to the harassment but returned due to her husband’s emotional dependence on his family. On 24/08/2025, her husband allegedly physically assaulted her, leaving her at her maternal aunt’s house. Upon returning to her in-laws on 28/10/2025, she was denied food and basic amenities, subjected to obscene language and caste-based abuse, and was physically assaulted again, including an attempted strangulation by her brother-in-law Vinay, which was interrupted by the presence of her sister Sonam.
Since June 2023, the complainant states that she has been mentally tortured, verbally abused in casteist terms, physically beaten, and humiliated by her mother-in-law, husband, and brothers-in-law. She reports that her husband has repeatedly colluded with his family in her harassment, including restricting her access to her marital home and refusing to take her to his village.
The complainant states that she does not wish to compromise on the matter and seeks legal action against Madhavi Balkisan Gulapelli, Vivek Balkisan Gulapelli, Vinay Balkisan Gulapelli, and Bharat Balkisan Gulapelli for continuous caste-based harassment, physical assault, and mental cruelty.
