Case brief

Case summary

Lakkavva Basavaraju Gaikwad, age 38, lives in Devpurahatti village in Rayabhaga taluk of Belgaum district. He belongs to the Hindu Ganti caste, a Scheduled Caste nomadic community. He has two daughters and one son along with three children. The first of them, Swathi Basavaraju Gaikwad, aged 14, is studying in class 8. On 27/02/2026, at around 8:30 in the morning, Swathi Basavaraju Gaikwad, the daughter of Lakkavva Basavaraju Gaikwad, was lighting a pot outside her house. Then, in front of her, residing in the same village of Devpura Hattia, a 28-year-old youth named Hanumant Siddarama Maleda, belonging to the Kuruba community of the house, came driving a Bolero drunk. He got down from his car in a drunken state and watched as Swathi Basavaraju Gaikwad was lighting the pot. Then, the accused Hanumant ran to Swathi, grabbed Swathi's hand and dragged her away. Swathi screamed loudly in fear. At that time, Swathi's mother was working inside the house. When Swathi heard her screaming, she ran and saw her. Hanuman keeps saying that his hand is worth a lot. At that moment, Lakkava is shocked and he also shouts, "Leave my daughter." Then Hanuman, the accused, grabs Lakkava's hand, pulls her, tears her clothes, tears her panties, and beats her violently. Later, a case is registered in Raibagh taluk of Belgaum district on the same day.
