Case summary

The victim of the incident Dhammakiran lives with his mother Vijayamala, father Kathalu Lahade, stepmother and stepbrother in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar slum of Yerawada, Pune city. Kathalu Lahade, the victim of the incident, is his father. The victim earns a livelihood for his family by working as a labourer in a medical shop.
A year before the incident, the victim's brother Yogesh had married a Muslim girl living in the neighbourhood. But after marriage, both lived in their houses with their respective families. A day before the incident, Yogesh went to live elsewhere with his wife and mother. Yogesh's wife's family opposed the marriage because the victim was a Dalit. And the day after their daughter went to live with the victim, Yogesh's wife's brother Ismail and his companion murdered the victim's father with an axe.
