Case brief

Case summary

On 26-06-2026, in Bochanahalli village of Koppal taluk, Koppal district, people from all communities had gathered and were peacefully celebrating Muharram together. During this time, a man belonging to the Kuruba community, who was under the influence of alcohol, came staggering into the crowd and fell near some members of the Scheduled Caste community. Seeing this, Yamanappa, who belongs to the Madiga (Scheduled Caste) community, told him, “Why are you coming here drunk and falling near our boys? Go away from here.” Because of these words, an argument started. Verbal exchanges and heated words took place between the Madiga community and people from other communities present there. After this quarrel, the members of the Madiga community went back to their homes. What happened on 27-06-2026 The next day, 27-06-2026, people from the same village – including Muslims, Kurubas, Acharis, Upparas and others – gathered together and surrounded the street where the Madiga community lives. They began shouting loudly and creating fear and tension in that area. At that time, two 16‑year‑old boys from the Madiga community came out of their house to see what was happening and why there was so much noise. As soon as they came out, people from the other communities assaulted and beat them. When other members of the Madiga community came out of their homes to see what was going on and to understand the reason for the shouting and disturbance, they too were attacked. One person named Mansoor, acting on his own will, allegedly assaulted them severely, beating and thrashing the Madiga community members.
