RENUKA – ABETMENT TO SUICIDE

    Brief Details of the Incident:

    Renuka (14) d/o Ponnakanti Hanumanthu, Budagajangam by caste and is the resident of Miyapur. She was studying 5th standard in A.P. Social Welfare Society Residential School at Shivareddypet, Vikarabad mandal in Ranga Reddy District.

    On 21st February 2010 night, Renuka’s classmate Ujjwala screamed as she had a bad dream due to which other students were also scared and started screaming. Lavanya and Nirmala the teachers sleeping in the next room got disturbed and beat all the students. As the teacher pushed Renuka against a wall, she had head injury and fell unconscious. Renuka was admitted to Govt. hospital at Vikarabad by the school staff and the same was informed to her parents. Having come to know, Renuka’s brothers Dastagiri and Prakasam went to the school and questioned the staff. They took Renuka to their house as instructed by the staff. This incident was given much visibility through print media.

    Renuka was brought back to school by her parents after recovery. The principal and the staff refused to allow her and warned them to take her back. Though they repeatedly brought Renuka to the school and pleaded, the principal and the staff rejected to allow her to continue her studies and warned of dire consequences, stating that due to her, the reputation of their school was lost and the marriage proposals for Lavanya were also cancelled. They also threaten saying that they will lodge a complaint in the police station against her and write that her conduct is bad in the Transfer Certificate. Due to this situation the parents of Renuka approached the Sub-Collector of Vikarabad, on 20/03/2010, but in vain.

    Renuka was very much interested to pursue higher education and that is the reason she joined the residential school in 5th standard since she got the seat through entrance test, though she was pursuing 7th standard in the government school. Dejected over the behavior of school management Renuka attempted for suicide by drenching herself with kerosene on 07/04/2010. She was admitted in Gandhi hospital Hyderabad by her parents. The doctors have confirmed that there are 75% of burns and situation is critical. A case has been registered in Miyapur P.S of Cyberabad, bearing Crime No. 160/2010 dated 07/04/2010 and on the same day dying declaration was recorded by the Magistrate. Renuka succumbed to the burn injuries on 22/04/2010.

CASTE ABUSE AND ATTACK

    Brief Details of the Incident:

    Meesala Yesamma (47) SC Madiga by caste, has been eking out life as a wage laborer.  Her husband expired fifteen years ago.  Three years ago she performed her son’s marriage. During that time, she approached Shanampudi Brahma Reddy resident of same village, photographer by profession, for taking pictures and videos of her son’s marriage. It was agreed that three thousand rupees be charged for the videography.   Yesamma paid the entire amount in advance. Shanampudi Brahma Reddy came and took the snaps and video but he did not hand over the pictures and the video CD even after one month after the marriage. Brahma Reddy never chooses to give the pictures and videos but always dodged and postponed on one pretext to other.  On 13.04.2010 Yesamma went to Brahma Reddy’s house and demanded the matter be settled then and asked him to give the pictures and video CD.  He replied that he had no pictures or videos, so Yesamma asked him to return the money.  Then Brahma Reddy abused her in the name of caste, saying ‘Madiga Bitch (nee amma, Madiga Lanja) whom you are talking to, don’t you understand what am saying”.

     

    Further, Brahma Reddy hit Yesamma with his leg and beat her till she was injured.  He bet her inhumanly not even showing mercy on the child in her arms. The people around came and rescued her. Brahma Reddy shouted in arrogance “let me see what your community does, go ahead and do whatever you want to, report where ever you want to, neither you cannot do anything nor you will succeed in doing anything, because it is our government.”

Brutal Assault on Dalit Family Tarapuram PS

    Raman (40), resident of Periyapudur village, Tarapuram Taluk, Tirupur District, belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community. Raman and his wife Jothi (35) are working as farm laborers. On 02/04/2010 their chicken was found missing. Hence On 03/04/2010, Raman and his son Mahendran (14) were in search of their chicken. Later they found that Mounagurusamy kept the chicken locked inside his farmland. When they enquired about this and asked him to return the chicken, Mounagurusamy brutally assaulted them and verbally abused them referring derogatory regarding caste. In the evening Jothi, after returning from work, came to know about the assault of the perpetrators, went to Mounagurusamy’s farmhouse to enquire about this. Mounagurusamy considering this as an insult and outrageous, verbally abused her referring derogatory regarding caste. He kicked her in the chest, pushed her to the ground, torn her jacket and spanked her with the nylon rope leaving grievous injury on her back. On hearing the shout of Jothi, her younger son Sathish and her mother-in law came to her rescue and released her from the assault.

     

    Jothi was rushed to the Tarapuram Government Hospital and was getting medical treatment. Police arrived to the hospital and got the complaint from her and registered a FIR against the perpetrator Mr. Maunagurusamy, who was found absconding.

False Charges on a Scavenger

    P. Ponnusamy, resident of Kumarasen Nagar, Kalugumalai, Kovilpatti Taluk, Thoothukudi district, belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community. He is working as a scavenger in the Kalugumalai Primary Health Centre and he is an alcoholic. His wife Mrs. Kaliyammal, is also working in this PHC as a part time scavenger. On 30/03/2010, Ponnusamy and his wife had a scuffle during the evening. Hence Dr. Shanthi, Principal Health Officer of the PHC, immediately reported about this to the Director of General Government Hospital Kovilpatti.

     

    During the evening PA to the Director, Bhagavathi Perumal, came to the PHC and woke up Ponnusamy. Bhagavathi asked Ponnnusamy to stand near to the broken glass window and took a snap of it in his mobile. Then he asked Ponnusamy to stand near the tree, whose branches were broken and took a photo of this in his mobile. Then he verbally abused him referring derogatory regarding caste, saying Sakkilis always behave like this and I will teach you a lesson. Then he asked Ponnusamy to get in to the car and took him to the General Government Hospital, Kovilpatti.

     

    Bhagavathi allegedly complained to the Director that Ponnusamy broken the glass window and broke the tree branches. Bhagavathi purposefully took those photos and framed these allegation against him. Due to this false allegations, charges were framed against Ponnusamy and he was served suspension order until further orders.

TRIVENI – ATTACK, GANG RAPE & DEATH

    Brief Details of the Incident:

    Triveni (12) belonging to Holiya Dasari caste, daughter of Pothuraju (45).  Pothuraju works as a watchman in the independent building under construction belonging to Mahesh at Borabanda. The ground floor contains two portions, one portion is occupied by Satyanarayana working as reporter in Andhra Jyothi news paper and other portion is rented to Kumar a lorry driver.  Pothuraju stays in the first floor which is under construction.  He has come to know that prostitution is being done in the portion taken by Kumar and the same was brought to the notice of the owner.  The owner has warned them and asked to vacate the house immediately.

    On 29.03.2010, Pothuraju and his wife went to distribute the wedding cards of their eldest son.  On the same day night four persons wearing masks have forcefully entered the house beat his two sons and Triveni with rods causing grievous injuries.  Later they all gang raped Triveni and left away at a stage when all three fell unconscious.  The perpetrators bolted the house of Satyanarayana from outside.  Satyanarayana’s wife could come out around 8.a.m as the milk man came and opened the outside bolt.  As nobody from Pothuraju’s family was responding, she went up and came to know that all three were unconscious and Triveni was lying naked.  They informed the police and moved them to hospital in 108 ambulance. The police came around 10.a.m. and pressed the dog’s squad in to force. Triveni was given treatment in an unconscious state for one week in Gandhi hospital and she died around 8.30 p.m. on 07.04.2010 and medical negligence is also one of the reasons. All the 4 accused were identified and remanded on 19/6/2012.
