Pudapaadi village Panchayat is in Ammapettai Union, Bhavani Taluk, Erode district. In Pudapaadi, during 2004 women belongs to all SC/MBC/BC community formed a SHG under the name Sri Lakshmi Women Self Help Group. Due to its better performance, the group was awarded Rs. 3 lakhs as a loan by the SBI Bank, to start a marriage decoration business. Chandrika w/o Ganesan is the Coordinator of the SHG. Ganesan belongs to dominant caste hindu Kounder community and affiliated to ADMK Political party. He usurped the 3 lakhs given by the bank. Since he have not given the money to the SHG, on 09/10/2009, members of the group went to his house to enquire about the money. Ganesan who could not tolerate the assertiveness of these women, verbally abused them derogatory regarding caste. On seeing Lakshmi and knowing her community, he verbally abused her saying, “you sakkili prostitute how dare you come to my house and ask me to repay the money. All the SHG who felt humiliated by this abuse, filed a complaint with the Ammapettai Police station. Since the police have not taken any action on the complaint, they filed a complaint with the District SP and Ganesan was arrested. On knowing this arrest of Ganasen, through his political influence, 4 MLAs visited the police station and brought Ganasen back to his house with all the due respect.

Death of Two Manual Scavengers

- Summary::
S. Udayan (22), resident of Kannahi Street, Tiruchi, belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community. M. Sakthivel (25), resident of Sathiciapuram, Sivakasi Taluk, Virudhunagar District, belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community. Both are engaged in Septic Tank Cleaning Service with a Tank Lorry. Mr. V. Radhakrishnan, belongs to dominant caste hindu Nayakkar community, is the owner of Sri Karthick Hotel located in Ettayapuram Taluk, Thoothukudi district.. He also owns a public toilet near to his hotel. On 07/10/09, Udayan and Sakthivel, approached Radhakrishnan to clean the Septic Tank of the Public toilet in return for payment. As Radhakrisnan agreed to the deal, both started to exchaust the septic tank with a pipe. After sucking the drain with the pipe, Sakthivel entered into the tank to clean manually. But due to gas leakage, Sakthivel got suffocated and fell unconscious inside the tank. Udayan who entered in to the tank to rescue Sakthivel was also succumbed to the gas leakage and fell conscious. Both died inside the tank. Both the bodies were lifted out with the help of Fire Service department and sent for post mortem. Victims’ families were not provided with any monetary compensation by the Hotel Owner in this regard.

Corporal Punishement and False Complaints

V. Stalin (17), resident of Veeramanickapuram, Thirunelveli District, belongs to Dalit Pallan community. He is pursuing AC Mechanic in the Grimmson Institute, Murugankuritchi. Ramachandiran relative’s marriage is organized in JVR Marriage Hall. Hence Ramachandiran asked Stalin, to go the Hall along with other handpicked students, to work as a supplier in return for Rs. 75. Excluding Stalin every other students have been paid the wage the service. On 05/10/09, after knowing this from other students, he sought permission from his class teacher Ravikumar, to meet Ramachandiran to ask for the money. Since Ravikumar and Ramachandiran who are having acrimonious relationship, denied the request of Stalin and ordered him not to speak to Ramakrishnan. Stalin met Ramachandiran during the lunch time and asked for the money. Ramachandiran agreed to pay him later. Ravikumar noticed this conversation between Ramachandiran and Stalin. During the class hours after the lunch break, Ravikumar called Stalin and slapped him on his ear for not obeying his order, saying how dare you speak to him even after I ordered you not to speak to him? Stalin who had a severe pain, after a while realized that blood is leaking out of his ear. On reaching home, he reported this to his father. After filing a complaint with the Police station, Stalin was admitted in the Palayamkottai Government Hospital. He was asked to take treatment for 15 days to get this cured. Ramachandiran who visited Stalin in the hospital, threatened him saying that If you want to continue your education, you need to withdraw the complaint given to the police station. Ramachandiran tried to win over Stalin, by paying money for medical expenses. But Stalin’s father Victor rejected the offer.

Dalit Bonded Labour Tarn Taran Akbarpur.

- Summary:: Gora Singh S/o Mehar Singh resident of Village - Akbarpura, tehsil & District- Tarntaran. He belongs to ‘Majhabi Sikh’ caste which has been declared as scheduled caste by the Govt. of Punjab. He worked for Balvir Singh @ Bira S/o Sardul Singh (Jatt Sikh) resident of village-Akbarpur, tehsil & District- Tarntaran. Balvir Singh gave advance Rs.25,000/ to Gora Singh. The bonded labourer used the advance money to repay the bonded debt of his previous employer Dilbag Singh who is the bother of Balvir Singh. Bonded Labourer Gora Singh started work from year 2007 and he worked till 2009 for Balvir Singh. Bonded Labourer worked for 24 hours for Balvir Singh. Balvir Singh never paid him full wages he gave him only Rs. 50 or Rs. 100 after 10 days. When bonded labourer demand his wages from Balvir Singh to purchase the wheat. Then Balvir Singh & his son Gopi beaten him mercilessly, abused him on caste basis and threaten him to pay them bonded debt otherwise they will forcibly took possession of his residential house. The employer demands bonded debt Rs.35000/-from the bonded labour. A complaint was sent to Deputy Commissioner, Tarntaran on 5/10/09 Ref.No. DDVA/54001/09. Now the bonded labour is physically free and free from bonded debt.

Murder of a Dalit youth

- Summary:: Late Raja residing in Vandipalayam village of Thindivanam taluk. He belong to Hindu Adi Dravidar community. On 15th September 2009 one person Jothi belonging to Adidravidar community passed away. The funeral procession had to pass through the main street of Caste Hindu residence. The caste Hindus belonging to Vanniyar community intervened and blocked the procession. The dead body had to lie on the road for five hours. After five long hours the Thasildhar and RDO along with Police came to the spot convinced dominant caste people and allowed the funeral procession on the same road. Immediately after the incident the Vanniyars issued social and economical boycott on dalits. They blocked the all access roads with thorns, damaged drinking water supply pipes to Adidravidar and all shops denied goods for them. Even Children were denied milk the Vanniyars also damaged few electric motors which belongs to Mani and Nagaraj and threw them into the well. The victims along with other people gave complaint at the Marakkanam police station. The police called the dalit people for a peace committee meeting on 04.10.2009. All the dalits went to the police station in the evening and were waiting for the Inspector of Police. In the mean time some youths belonging to Vanniyar community burnt the poultry belonging to Raja intervened and try stop the Vanniyars. Since the Vanniyars and Naidus including Balu, Baktavatchalam, Murugesan, Palani, Lingusamy, Ravindran, Ravi, Rajendran, Iyanvaidu, Vellai Naciker, Purushotaman were in more number they killed Raja on the spot. The gang of eleven people then ransacked the house of nineteen dalits. They damaged the houses, utensils. Two buffalos were also killed.
