M. Kalishwari(5th Std), K. Anandhi (5th Std), K. Audaiammal (3rd Std) are belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community. They are studying in the Panchayat Union Primary School in Kaluhumalai. Parents of these three students are working as scavengers in government offices. Knowing that these students belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community and their parents are working as scavengers, Head Master Leelavathi asked these students to clean the toilet. They have been exploited by Leelavathi to clean the toilet. These three students reported of dizziness, skin scratches, fever and infection in their body parts. On the enquiry, they reported that their HM asked them to clean the toilets every day. Hence their parents went to the school to enquire about this atrocity (untouchability and discriminatory) practice. On seeing their children being engaged in the manual scavenging activities, they scolded the HM. Concerned parents filed a complaint with the Kalugumalai Police station. After initial denial of this atrocity, the HM admitted of this untouchability practice. As she apologized to the parents of the children, by touching their feet, case was withdrawn and compromised with the Head Master.
Maddadi Bharathi (6), Maddadi Venkanna was playing in front of her house. She was hit by the cycle of Kothapalli Rama Krishna (20), Kapu by caste belonging to Achutapuram village. As the girl was seriously injured, victim’s father Maddadi Venkanna s/o Dharmaraju questioned Ramakrishna. As he was not saying anything Surapudi Veeraraju neighbor of victim also questioned him. As Ramakrishna replied in a filthy language Veera Raju and Venkanna beat him up and took away his cycle. Later Ramakrishna came back along with Chella Rao and took back his cycle.
Around 12.30pm on the same day Ramakrishna, Kola Mallikarjuna and 80 others belonging to Achuthapuram village came on 5 autos, bikes and cycles. On the way they asked villagers on the whereabouts of the victim’s father and questioned why Ramakrishna was beaten, we would have paid the necessary amount as per the intensity of the injuries. They said we would have paid the amount if the victim has died or even fractures to her hands or legs. Later they went to the house of the victim and ransacked the houses, tore the blouses of dalit women Saraswati, Ganikulu and Prabhavati. They abused on the name of caste and beat them up. They also warned the whole village and threaten them of dire consequences. The situation was tense and the dalits were living in fear. Though the RDO and SDPO have visited the village but failed in building confidence among the dalits. The accused were arrested.
Nalli Sunitha(19), D/o David Raju and Sarojini is a resident of Antharvedepalem village, Sakinetipalli Mandal, East Godavari District. On the date of incident i.e., on 5th Nov’08 Adabala Srinu S/o Bulli Satyam OC Kapu by caste, resident of same village sat in the veranda of the victim’s house. Sunitha who was alone in her house was preparing for her exams the accused started staring at her. Feeling conscious she requested the accused to go back to his house because he was intoxicated. She pressurized him many times saying that he was not in a good condition.
For this the accused abused her in the name of caste and scolded her in filthy language. The victim tolerated while he was abusing her. At last she revolted when he was coming towards her to assault. With that the accused sister, mother and his aunt joined him and attacked her. They gathered dry leaves and pour kerosene on her. By that time the victim’s mother came back from her workplace and saw her daughter and immediately went for her rescue for which even she was attacked.
Morra Sugunamma(28), SC by caste, W/o Morra Narasimulu, is a resident of Tirumalapur, Shabad Mandal, Rangareddy District. On 27.10.2008, 4:00 p.m. in the evening, Sugunamma was returning home from the field carrying fire wood on her head. She was stopped by Veema Reddy S/o Mohan Reddy, Devender Reddy S/o Bhupathi Reddy, Md. Yaseen S/o Mohammudhin residents of same village dragged into the corn fields and sexually assaulted her.
Few minutes later Sugunamma’s husband Morra Narasimulu was passing by the same road and heard a women screaming for help. He quickly rushed into the corn fields and found that it was his wife. When he tried to rescue her the accused attacked him, wounded him and escaped in a car. It was a planned attack on the victim as K Mallesh S/o Bheemaiah was guarding on the road.
The village Nani Kathechi is in the Limbdi taluka of Surendranagar. This is a case of violation of women’s rights. There is always a dominant community in the village to rule villagers. But in every house there is a male dominating women from the ancient time. When violation took place within the four walls of the house you do not find any witness there. The sameful episodes in matrimonial cases are that the women are being harashed by women in the family.
The victim of this case got married to accused Kanabhai Fakubhai Padhar. After the marriage she was tortured and betaen up by her husband saying that she does not know how to cook, she was not liked by the accused. In spite that she continued married life with a hope that one day everything would be alright. She had three sons and three daughters. Even after the 18 years of marriage life her husband used to drink and beat her.
When she could not bear the physical beating and mental agony she left her husband’s house and started living with her uncle as her father is no more. On the day of 4th October 2008 she was at her uncle’s house, the accused came there with his two friends and abused her and she was betan up. Thereafter she lodged complaint against her husband and his two friends under section 498(A), 323, 504, 506(2) and 114 of IPC.
