Thadaham Road, Sundapalayam, F.C. Godown Street, Kumarasamy Colony of 57th ward is home to nearly 2000 Dalit Valluvar and Arunthathiyar community. They are residing in these locations for the last 40 years. Till date they have been denied housing patta by the government. They have sent many petitions to the District Administration seeking provision of Housing patta. But the district Administration and the Municipal corporation are negligent to provide housing patta. District Administration, which is denying housing patta to these Dalit families, with the excuse that this land belongs to Government Poromboke land, has given approval to build Apartments for the dominant caste hindus within this Poromboke land premises. On 29/12/2009 considering this negligence of the government, dalits of these locality staged a Fast unto death protest demonstration, in front of Tamil Nadu Hotel, in Coimbatore. S. Thangavel, resident of Kumarasamy colony, Sundapalayam, belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community, tried to self immolate himself in protest to the negligence of the Government. He was prevented from doing and arrested for this attempt.
C. Sekar (28), resident of Nagalingapuram, Avinashipalayam, Palladam Taluk, Tiruppur District, belongs to Dalit community. He is a BA graduate and pursuing B.L and D.Ted. He was subject to caste discrimination by his school teachers and caste hindu students during his school days. On 25/12/2009, around 10.30 am, he went to Ragham Saloon, located in Koduvaai to have his hair cut. But the owner of the shop Mr. Kannachi, refused to do hair cut for Sekar considering his caste. When Sekar asked for the reason, Kannachi told that he only do service to the caste hindus. Being humiliated by this denial, Sekar filed a complaint with the Avinashipalayam Police station with the help of Communist party cadres. But the Sub Inspector of the Station gave an acknowledge receipt of the complaint and have not filed an FIR against Kannachi for the untouchability practice. On knowing that Sekar filed a complaint implicating Kannachi, Kannachi, 8 other Saloon owners belonging to Navithar community and 300 shop owners belonging to dominant caste hindu Kounder community closed their shops and staged a road blockade. With the help of the Pongalur MLA A. S. Mani, Navithars and other caste hindus file a false counter complaint against Sekar, and Communist party cadres for criminal intimidation at the Avinashipalayam. Police Inspector Mr.Sivakumar and other police officials were negligent to take action against the perpetrators and biased in favour of caste hindus who practicing Untouchability.
S. Malathi (16), resident of Kaliyankulam, Aalangkulam Taluk. Thirunelveli district, belongs to Dalit Pallan community. Her father is a daily wage labour. She is studying 11th Standard in St. Paul Higher Secondary School located in Singhampaarai. During quarterly exam she fell ill due to fever. Her parents gave tablets for that and after the exam, they took her to the Mukkudal primary Health Centre. Even after this, as her fever have not reduced, they took her to the Mukkudal Beedi Labourers Hospital. There her parents were advised to take her to the Thirunelveli Government Hospital, fearing she is having Brain Fever. Malathi was admitted in the Medical college hospital, Thirunelveli in the ICU. After a treatment for a week in the ICU, she was shifted to the 127th ward for further treatment for a month. Then she was transferred to the Neurology department. She was given treatment for nearly 15 days. The doctors have not provided the right medicine considering the cost of the medicines and they compelled Malathi’s father to get those costly medicines on his own. They delayed the treatment considering the cost of the medicines required to cure Malathi’s illness. During the course of the treatment, she started complaining dizziness and poor eye sight. As the days goes by, her health deteriorated and her eye sight becoming dull. On 23/12/2009, around 1 pm she lost her eye sight completely. Malathi’s father Sivanathan, wrote a petition to the District Collector to recommend to provide treatment under the government scheme in private hospital. Doctors in the Hospital were accused of taking fluids from her back bone twice in a day consequently for the 15 days, this leads to her poor health condition and loss of eye sight.
