Murder of a Dalit Youth for Sitting on Chair While Watching Orchestra

    The deceased  Manoj Kumar Manjhi S/o Vishwa Karma Manjhi who belongs to Dalit community (Dushad), working in a plywood factory,  residence of Nipania village, Saran District which comes under Ishwapur Police Station.

     

    On 03/12/09 night the victim Manoj Kumar, his younger brother Ashok Kumar Manjhi and his neighbour Sushil Kumar Manjhi went to attend an orchestra on the occasion of a Marriage that was arranged by the non Dalit community. They were watching the orchestra while sitting on the ground. When one of the dominant caste persons who was sitting on the chair got up and went away, the victim went and sat on the chair, as it was vacant.

     

    When the dominant caste person came back to his chair, he got irritated by seeing Manoj Kumar sitting on the chair. He forced the victim to tell his caste name. When the Manoj Kumar told his caste name (Dushad), the dominant caste person became very angry and started beating the victim. He also abused the victim in the name of caste.

     

    Later, when father of the bride of that Marriage function namely Harendar Sharma who also belongs to the same dominant caste came there and inquired the situation. When he came to know that the victim belongs to the Dalit community, the irate Harendar Sharma ordered one of the person who was having gun to shoot Manoj Kumar. Suddenly Manoj Kumar was shot and died in the spot.

     

    The case has been registered on 03/12/09. FIR no. 64/09 u/s 302/34 of IPC, 27 Arms Act and 3(2)(v) of SC/ST (PoA) Act 1989. But so far no accused have been arrested and no compensation has been provided to the victim’s family.

     

    The case has been registered in the Eshuapur police station. Spot investigation conducted on 4.12.2009 at 6.30am by the DSP Chandrashekher Prasad Singh. DSP took the body of Manoj for the PM Report to Chhapra hospital on 4 Dec.2009. The case is investigated by the DSP Chandrashekher Prasad Singh. Charge Sheet is filed. The Mukhiya had given Rs 1500/- to the grieved family for the cremation of the body

Murder of a Old Dalit Woman

    Arukkani (65), resident of Mariamman Kovil Street, Karukkampalayam, Palladam Taluk, Tiruppur district, belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community. She is a widow, living with her son Murugan. Arukkani used to work in the Somanur weekly Vegetable market as a vegetable cleaner. On 02/12/2009, around 05.30 am, as usual Murugan went to drop her in his motor bike at Samalapuram. Before leaving to work, Arukkani and Murugan had tea at the Kasthuri Bakery at Samalapuram. As Arukkani was walking towards the busstop to board the bus to Somanur Market, one Syed Abudahir residing in Mudalipalayam, Tiruppur, tried to snatch away the cash bag of Arukkani. As she resisted Syed Abudahir, strike her with a stone. On seeing this Murugan, Ramasamy and Duraisamy (all are having tea while this attack was happening) tried to save her. But Syed threatened to kill who tries to intervene. He immediately escaped from this scene, leaving Arukkani in a pool of blood. The Arukkani was taken to the hospital through 108 emergency ambulance service. Arukkani succumbed to her injury and died on the way. A case was filed against Syed for this murder.

Ammasi died on Accidental Death

    S. Ammasi (30), resident of Thenmalai, Sivagiri Taluk, Thirunelveli District, belongs to Dalit Arunthathiyar community. He was working for the Construction of MRF Company in IT Park Gangaikondan. On 01/12/09, as usual Ammasi went for the construction work for MRF. During the morning, S. Muthaiah, brother of Ammasi, received a call saying  that his brother fell sick and was admitted in the Thirunelveli Government Hospital. When Muthaiah went to the hospital, they told that his brother already died. But Muthaiah and his relatives, witnessed injury marks all over his body. They suspected that his brother was beaten to death or might have sustained these injuries as he fell down during the work. But the MRF company administration lied that he died due to sickness. After the post mortem report and police investigation revealed that Ammasi sustained these injuries and died as he fell down during work. Hence relatives and solidarity groups protested condemning against the negligence of the MRF company and refused to receive the body. As the police department promised proper investigation and as the company agreed to pay Rs. 50000 as monetary compensation for the death, relatives of the deceased agreed to receive the body and buried him.

Corporal Punishment (Brutal Assault)

    Ramesh Babu, resident of Meenthuli Village, belongs to Dalit Pallan community. He is pursuing 9th standard in St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, Naranammalpuram, Thirunelveli. He is staying in the School Hostel. He is also the leader of the Students Hostel. Everyday there will be study hour in their hostel. On 31/11/09 11am, as usual he called the students to attend the study hour. At that time, Teacher Jagadish engaged the students in some work and he was speaking to the students. Again Ramesh Babu called the students saying that if they are fail to come , he will report about them to the Hostel Warden. Jagadish who was speaking to the students whom were called by Ramesh Babu, felt humiliated, hit him on his head. Then he pushed his head towards the wall, causing immense pain. Jagadish threatened Ramesh not to report this to any one. Due to severe pain, Ramesh Babu have not attended the study. He fell sick of fever and asked for two day leave and asked his mother to pick him up.

     

    On reaching home, Ramesh Babu reported this to mother, then he was admitted in the Sankaran Kovil Private hospital. His grandfather lodged a complaint against Jagadish at the Panavidalichatiram Police station. But the police refused to register the complaint. Then they asked the school management to give the Transfer certificate saying that they are planning to get him admitted in an another school. Then the school management promised to take care of Ramesh babu from similar incidents and gave a written apology letter from the erred school teacher Jagadish. After the apology Ramesh Babu decided to continue in the same school.

Mass attack on Dalit family over a land dispute- Halan village

  • Summary:: The crime of mass attack on a Dalit family happened at Raman Faatp Halan village of Kullu district. Victim Tez Singh S/o Naru R/o Village - Raman Faati Halan, Tehsil – Kothi Nagar, District Kullu in Himachal Pradesh, belongs to Scheduled Caste community and professes Hindu religion. On 24.11.09 around 100 dominant caste perpetrators (males and females) led by Sukhram s/o Trirthram, Keshavram s/o Nathu, Tek chand s/o Ruldu, Balakram so/o Rewatram, Dinu s/o Meher Chand, Dolaram s/o Meher Chand from Village - Raman Faati Halan, Tehsil – Kothi Nagar, District Kullu, Himachal Pradesh belonging to Rajput community attacked Tez Singh and his family with Lathis and other sharp weapons at around 11 A.M.. They also abused the victim by using caste lines and threatened them with dire consequences. The mother and daughter of the victim sustained grievous injuries by the attack of perpetrators. The victim in the morning at around 8 AM, informed the nearby police station –Patlikuhal and approached the S.H.O, for security as a preventive measure, as he came to know through some one that dominant caste perpetrators may attack his house, but the S.H.O showed his inability to provide any security. After that the victim left for his regular work. Later he got a phone call from his home that the dominants have attacked his house and are also abusing his family in caste lines. He again approached the Patlikuhal Police Station for help. After the victim reached his house he was also abused and threatened of life. Later the police officials came and tried to calm down the matter and proceeded for criminal action. That in the past, the above mentioned accused have had insulted victim’s daughter and attacked his house with stones and lathis on 28 May, 2007. The case in respect of the same is under trial in the Hon\'ble court of Kullu. That on 01 June, 2007 the dominants agreed before the Panchayat not to indulge in such type of criminal activities against the victim. That on 04 September 2009 the above dominant caste accused destroyed agricultural produce and used caste based abusive language. The victim in respect of this case lodged a complaint in the police station. A case has been registered under the SC/ST Act but so far no action has been taken on the above complaint.
