Ramesh Babu, resident of Meenthuli Village, belongs to Dalit Pallan community. He is pursuing 9th standard in St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, Naranammalpuram, Thirunelveli. He is staying in the School Hostel. He is also the leader of the Students Hostel. Everyday there will be study hour in their hostel. On 31/11/09 11am, as usual he called the students to attend the study hour. At that time, Teacher Jagadish engaged the students in some work and he was speaking to the students. Again Ramesh Babu called the students saying that if they are fail to come , he will report about them to the Hostel Warden. Jagadish who was speaking to the students whom were called by Ramesh Babu, felt humiliated, hit him on his head. Then he pushed his head towards the wall, causing immense pain. Jagadish threatened Ramesh not to report this to any one. Due to severe pain, Ramesh Babu have not attended the study. He fell sick of fever and asked for two day leave and asked his mother to pick him up.
On reaching home, Ramesh Babu reported this to mother, then he was admitted in the Sankaran Kovil Private hospital. His grandfather lodged a complaint against Jagadish at the Panavidalichatiram Police station. But the police refused to register the complaint. Then they asked the school management to give the Transfer certificate saying that they are planning to get him admitted in an another school. Then the school management promised to take care of Ramesh babu from similar incidents and gave a written apology letter from the erred school teacher Jagadish. After the apology Ramesh Babu decided to continue in the same school.
Barani Matriculation School, is in Periyapattu, Chidambaram Taluk, Cuddalore District. This school educates upto 9th standard. Nearly 500 children from the Periyapattu and from 9 other villages. On 23/11/09, 44 children boarded the school van to the school. While the van is on its way to the school, School van driver lost the control and the van met with an accident. It dashed the tree and fell into the 2 metre deep water pool. All the students, teacher and the driver sustained grievous injury. All the injured were taken to the Cuddalore Government Hospital and Puduchatiram Government Hospital for medical treatment. Student Ramu (4) LKG succumbed to his injury and died.
In the Government Hospital, students (most of them belongs to dalit community), were not provided adequate medical treatment. Some of the parents have taken their injured children to private hospitals. Hospital was found to be negligent in providing proper medical treatment. Doctors asked the parents to take scans in other private hospitals, spending their own money. School Administration has not taken any steps to ensure proper provision of medical treatment. Affected students are in mental trauma since the accident, but the school administration had not taken any steps to mitigate the accident affects on the students.
Padarthapuli panchayat is home to nearly 30 Dalit Arunthathiyar family of 100 people. During 1996, panchayat election, votings of these 30 Arunthathiyar families was transferred to Ramanuthu panchayat, which is 3 kilometre away from their settlements. This transfer lead to many hardships for the Arunthathiyar families. They are deprived of proper street lights, drinking water facilities. Elected representatives are negligent to fulfill their basic needs. To avail the benefits of government schemes, they have to walk long distance to reach Ramanuthu panchayat. They were not provided Identity Card to get jobs under 100 days NREGA Programme. Nayakkars of this panchayat due to their political influence, transferred their votes without getting the approval or their opinion in this regard.
These 30 families are not having proper road facilities, they are discriminated and omitted regarding provisionof benefits regding government schemes. Hence they were filing petitions with the District Magistrate, Tahilsdar, and Member of Legislative Assembly, to rejoin these 30 families back to the Padaruli panchayat, for the last 2 years, in vain.
Saravanakumar, resident of Kodipallam village, Chidambaram Taluk, Cuddaore District, belongs to Dalit Paraiyar community. He is working as a Lecturer in Annamalai Univerisity. Oli Mohammed, resident of the same village, received Rs. 2 lakhs from Saravanakumar by leasing out his 2.5 acres of land located in Kodipallam. Due to financial constrains Mohammed decided to sell the land to Saravanakumar. Knowing this, Muthaiyan, Sivalingam and Murugasen all belongs to Dalit community and Kodipallam village, demanded Mohammed to sell the land to them. But Mohammed refused and told that he will sell the property only to Saravanakumar. Being disappointed by this, all the three men started exerting pressure on Saravanakumar. They instigated the villagers to seek the land for construction of free houses. Hence they filed petition with the District collector and Tasildar seeking the Mohammed’s land for provision of housing patta. Mohammed rejected the request of the District Administration. Due to further financial constrains Mohammed sold the land to Saravanakumar. Muthaiyan, Sivalingam and Murugasen, who were not able to tolerate this, out of jealous, organized the Kangaroo court and ostracized Saravanakumar. Hence the villagers were prohibited to speak with Saravanakumar and not to have any contact with him. And announced that the defaulters should pay a fine of Rs. 5000.
Saravakumar reported about this ostracism to the district collector. The district administration organized a peace meeting and warned the three culprits not to indulge in ostracism.
